A Report on the 6th Lux Pacifica Conference in Bangkok
Hajimu NAKAMURA
Chairman of the Lux Pacifica Committee in Illuminating Engineering Institute of Japan
1. Introduction
Lux Pacifica is the lighting conference organized by the Pacific Rim lighting
societies. It has been originally named Pacific Basin Lighting Congress.
This conference came to be well known as a good opportunity for international
exchange to which lighting designers, researchers, educators, engineers,
etc in the countries of the Pacific Rim countries meet together, and perform
the announcement of a result, discussion, information exchange. The Lux
Pacifica has the goals of assisting developing countries and emphasizing
that good lighting design based on science and engineering is important.
The member lighting societies of Lux Pacifica are:
Illuminating Engineering Society of Australia & New
Zealand
Illuminating Engineering Society of North America
Illuminating Engineering Institute of Japan
China Illuminating Engineering Society
Indian Society of Lighting Engineers
Illuminating Engineering Society of Russia
Thai Illuminating Engineering Association
Illumination Engineering Society of South Africa
The first Lux Pacifica was held in 1989 in Shanghai, with successive conferences
being in Bangkok in 1993, Nagoya in 1997, New Delhi in 2002 (rather than
2001) and Cairns in 2005. The 6th Lux Pacifica was held in Bangkok,
capital of Thailand from 23th to 25th April 2009.
(It was originally to be held in Khabarovsk in Russia on the same dates.
However, the world financial crisis made it unable in January 2009.) The
Chair of Lux Pacifica, Prof. Warren Julian hosted this important regional
conference in Bangkok with the kind assistance of the Thai Illuminating
Engineering Association.
The theme of the conference was Light without Borders! , giving plenty
of scope to cover most topics in lighting art and science. Lighting designers,
researchers, educators, engineers, etc were invited to present papers on
examples of good design, experimental results on science, engineering, etc.
An interesting social and accompanying person's program complemented the
scientific and design sessions.
2. International Organization Committee
The officials that were appointed at the meeting of the International
Organization Committee held 24th April 2009 at the Holiday Inn
Silom are listed in Table 1.
The meeting decided that the 7th Lux Pacifica Conference would
be held in 2013 by Thailand of host country. India was thought of the second
host country. The conference venue will quite likely be in the place except
Bangkok, for example, Chiangmai, Puket. Henceforth, we will work toward
it with the International Organization Committee listed in Table 1. The
International Organization Committee invites those researchers, engineers
and designers who read this paper to participate in the 7th Lux
Pacifica Conference to be held in 2013.
The Chair of Lux Pacifica was consecutively assumed by Prof. Warren
Julian, and I, as a representative of Illuminating Engineering Institute
of Japan, was appointed vice-chairman. The next meeting of International
Organization Committee will be held in 2011 probably in South Africa at
the location of the next CIE Conference.

3. Arrangement for the 6th Lux Pacifica Conference
As we have known, February this year the IESR got it unable to host Lux
Pacifica in Khabarovsk because of the world financial crisis. This is very
unfortunate news, especially as only two months before the Conference. An
enormous effort has been made by the Chair of Lux Pacifica, Prof. Warren
Julian and the concerned, especially his wife, Stephanie Julian to relocate
the conference to Bangkok. As a result, the Chair has completed the organization
of an alternative venue in Bangkok on the same dates as in Khabarovsk.
The new website for the 6th Lux Pacifica in Bangkok was released on
27th February 2009. It showed the deadline of paper contribution was put
off until 14th May. Thereafter, it enabled to register and to contribute
paper easily for the Conference.
The papers from Japan were reviewed by the members of Lux Pacifica
Committee in IEIJ. Some applicants were requested to apply corrections to
their papers. Then, the 24 papers after corrected were sent to Prof. Warren
Julian before 14th March 2009 as PDF and Word on a CD. The results of selection
by the Lux Pacifica committee in IEIJ were received by the applicants in
same time.
