Prefectural Kashiwagi Agricultural High School in Aomori is located in the northwest area of the south edge of Tsugaru in Aomori. This traditional school having 84 years history is well known as agricultural high school in Japan. More than 17,000 graduates are active in various fields.

They started “Encourage Aomori from Aomori Kashiwagi agricultural high school, Hi-Tech Agriculture Project” utilizing the venture program by Aomori prefecture during 2 years from 2007 with the support for research of hi-tech agriculture by staff at agriculture and fisheries division. As this part of the project they implemented the experiments for plant growth in the sealed space utilizing empty classrooms caused by the low birth rate. High-pressure Sodium lamps were employed for the light source helping photosynthesis in empty classrooms.

“Vegetable made in classrooms” is the first attempt in Japan and were featured by local newspapers and TV.
