Hajimu NAKAMURA
Chairman of the Lux Pacifica Committee in Illuminating Engineering Institute of Japan
Fig. 1 shows the number of presentations by participating countries (counted based on the Proceedings). There were 53 presentations in total ; among them, 36 were from Japan, which is outstanding. Of 36 presentations, 30 were from academic institutions ; 1 from a public institution (Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport); and 5 from industries (manufacturers, etc).

The 53 presentations were split into 30 oral and 23 poster presentations (Fig. 2(a) and 2(b)). Among them, 15 oral presentations (50%) and 21 poster presentations (90%) were from Japan, which is the most active information providing country in the Pacific Rim area for the illuminating engineering field.
In past Lux Pacifica conferences, the number of presentations by Japanese was 13 for the 1st conference (Shanghai), 37 for the 2nd conference (Bangkok), 107 for the 3rd conference (Nagoya) and 16 for the 4th conference (New Delhi).

It is important to publish the achievements presented in an international conference like Lux Pacifica in periodical publications such as academic journals, as they have been reviewed and entitled to be published.
The numbers of participants (registrants) by country are shown in Fig. 3. There were 105 participants from ten countries including from non-Lux Pacifica countries. Among the participants, 39 were from Japan including accompany person, which was the largest. The second largest number of participants was 36 from the host countries, Australia and New Zealand. Japan had both the largest number of participants and paper presentations, which substantially contributed to the success of the conference.
With respect to the number of people participating only in meetings, the largest was 33 from Australia and New Zealand, and Japan was second at 31.
The 16-story Cairns International Hotel, the largest hotel in Cairns (Fig. 4), served as the venue for the conference. It is located downtown in a tourist area, convenient for dining, shopping etc. In the afternoon of July 24 (Sunday), a reception for participant registration was held in the lobby on the 2nd floor of the Cairns International Hotel. The Welcome Party began at 6 pm the same day in the Rainforest Dome, which is located across the street from the hotel. This was a buffet style party, where drinks and light meal were served.
The Rainforest Dome was a huge greenhouse-like dome housing rare animals including koalas, crocodiles, pythons and wild birds, as well as various tropical plants, which could be seen as you were walking through the pathway of the dome. It was a pleasant welcome party with a warm atmosphere, where we heard a welcome speech from chairman Dr. Warren Julian. Table 3 outlines the two-day conference program. The opening ceremony was held in Meeting Room A, presided by Mr. James Jewell. After Mr. Jewell first introduced the history and purposes of Lux Pacifica, Dr. Warren Julian, the chairman, announced the opening of the conference (Fig. 5). Then, Dr. Ian Cowling, the president of the Illuminating Engineering Society of Australia and New Zealand, made a welcome and congratulatory speech.

Thereafter, sessions began in Meeting Rooms A and B (Fig. 6). The chair of each session was assumed by members of the International Organizing Committee or members of the Illuminating Engineering Society of Australia and New Zealand. The venue for poster presentations was in the lobby in front of the session rooms, where ardent discussions were made (Fig. 7).
After the first day's sessions, a dinner party was held in an animal park located at about 40 minutes by bus from Cairns International Hotel. The dinner party was followed by an exploration tour of nocturnal animals. Walking through a pitch-dark rainforest and cruising a swamp by boat, we could see reptiles, including crocodiles, birds etc. In an open space, we could observe a sky full of stars.

The efforts of Chairman Dr. Warren Julian of the International Organizing Committee, who also assumed the chair of the Conference Steering Committee, played a significant part in the success of the 5th Lux Pacifica Conference. I take this opportunity to acknowledge his contribution.
I wish to thank Dr. Masato Oki, Professor in Dept. of Architecture, Ashikaga Institute of Technology and Mr. Tetsuo Yamaya, Lecturer in Nihon University for their valuable advice.
